King Dieter
The commandments of good industrial design from the king himself Dieter Rams. If you aren’t familiar with Dieter’s work take a look at every product Apple has released in the last 10 years. Each one has its roots in products that Dieter designed for Braun in the 60s and 70s. I wonder if Jonny Ive has ever met Mr. Rams. He needs to at least buy him a beer.
Here’s a shot of Dieter in 2005 at a retrospective of Braun design that my father curated.
ffffound!!!

I love this website. Sometimes I wonder if images are degraded when there are millions everywhere spread across a ton of photo sharing sites where it’s hard to find anything interesting. Every image on this site is amazing. Is there a site like this for video, it needs to happen.
Brand Experience Clock
Tanner Woodford of Fill / Stroke created this “Clock for Identity Designers” For me what’s interesting is not only seeing the logos in context, but seeing the brands that are experienced together or in concert throughout the day. Through design strategy research we are used to seeing brands in the context of direct competitors in a retail environment. Here we’re seeing those brands through a different context. I would love to see this project taken even further, beyond just the visual identities into the brand’s themselves, how they are experienced and how those experiences add meaning to the visual identities. In some ways the clock could be a visual way to see how our experiences build these brands.
Design as a Competitive Advantage
I love this guy, great design isn’t everything, but it definitely helps. Great design could help some other folks too maybe India, China and even Google. All three have seen explosive growth. All three can take another huge leap with a few amazing designers. India and China are primarily just manufacturers the next step is becoming designers. Google has made design decisions as only engineers can, by testing 45 shades of blue. Setting aside logic and bringing in an insanely great designer could be big.
